Overview

What GrandWeb is

GrandWeb wraps a website in a native Android shell built in Kotlin on the current Chromium web engine, and exposes the things that normally require Android work — theme colours, full-screen behaviour, splash screen, error pages, ad placement — as configuration rather than code.

Because the configuration is remote, the behaviour and appearance of a shipped app can be changed without publishing a new build to the Play Store.

It is aimed at developers and site owners who already have a working responsive website and need a maintainable Android presence for it, rather than a second codebase to keep in sync.

Who it is for

  • Site owners who need an Android app for an existing responsive website
  • Developers shipping several WebView apps who want one configurable base
  • Agencies that need to rebrand and re-theme the same app per client

Built with

  • Android
  • Kotlin
  • Chromium WebView
  • Remote Config
  • AdMob

Features

What is already built

Every capability listed here is implemented in the product as published on CodeCanyon.

Appearance

  • Configurable theming

Set the app theme using solid or gradient colours through configuration.

  • Auto-generated splash screen

A splash screen is produced for you from the configured branding.

  • Full-screen mode

Display the site full-screen, without the system chrome.

  • Custom error pages

Replace the default browser failure page with your own error page when a request fails.

Web capability

  • Current Chromium engine

Pages render on the current Chromium web engine through the native Android WebView.

  • Desktop or mobile rendering

Choose whether the site is requested and rendered as a desktop or a mobile page.

  • Media playback

Embedded video from YouTube, Vimeo and comparable providers plays inline.

  • JavaScript support

JavaScript alerts and JavaScript functions are supported from within the wrapped page.

Delivery

  • Remote configuration

Change the app's configuration remotely, without shipping a new build to the store.

  • Offline hosting from local assets

Bundle a website into the app's local assets and serve it without a network connection.

  • File download and upload

Downloads and file uploads initiated from the page are handled natively.

  • AdMob smart banners

AdMob smart banner advertising is integrated and configurable.

  • External app launcher

Links that belong to another installed app are handed off to that app instead of loading in the WebView.

Getting started

From download to running build

The short version. The full prerequisites, configuration notes and troubleshooting live in the documentation.

  1. Unzip the download and open the project in Android Studio.

  2. Let Gradle sync and resolve dependencies on first open.

  3. Set your application package name and the URL of the site you are wrapping.

  4. Configure appearance — theme colour (solid or gradient), full-screen behaviour, splash screen and error page.

  5. Enable AdMob and add your ad unit identifiers, if you are using advertising.

  6. Build and run, then test downloads, uploads and embedded video playback against your real site.

Questions

GrandWeb FAQ

Answers drawn from the marketplace listing and the product's own dependencies.

Do I need to write Android code to use it?

The product is listed as codeless: theming, splash screen, error pages, ads and rendering mode are driven by configuration. You still need Android Studio and a signing key to build and publish your own app.

Can I change the app after it is published?

Yes. Configuration is applied remotely, so appearance and behaviour can be changed without submitting a new build to the Play Store.

Does it work without an internet connection?

A website can be bundled into the app's local assets and served offline. A remotely hosted site still requires a connection.

Which Android versions are listed?

The listing records Android 12.0, 11.0, 10.0, 9.0 and other as supported software versions.

What is included in the download?

The listing states the download contains .apk, .db, .java, .xml, JavaScript, CSS and HTML files.

What licence do I get?

The licence is whichever Envato licence you select at checkout on CodeCanyon — a Regular or Extended licence. The licence terms are set and enforced by Envato, not by GrandCoders.
